Great Green Days Out

The Living Rainforest has launched the ‘Great Green Day Out’ campaign, which calls for families to opt for more environmentally friendly, locally orientated days out.

With the summer holidays here, families are finding it hard to know how to keep the children occupied. The campaign encourages parents to look at alternatives to large expensive theme parks that produce thousands of tonnes of waste, along with high carbon emissions.

Our suggestions for great, green days out
  • Track for signs of wild animals on a river walk and feed the ducks.
  • Fly a kite.
  • Start your own vegetable patch and grow some of your own food.
  • Go trekking on an English national trail, visit www.nationaltrail.co.uk.
  • Go horse riding.
  • Explore a coastal path.
  • Go and visit a local country park or gardens.
  • Try a new sport: how about canoeing, badminton, climbing, tennis, archery or snorkelling?
  • Cook bread, cakes, and biscuits etc using organic ingredients.
  • Go for a picnic.
  • Make a small boat out of recycled materials, put it on a string and ride it along in a pond. Maybe make it into a competition.
  • Discover a new nature trail near your home.
  • Go for a bike ride in the countryside.
  • Hire a rowing boat on the river.
  • Go body or board surfing on the beach.
