Caroline Lucas calls for support for green energy project

Dr. Caroline Lucas, the Green Party leader, is calling for the Government to support the Living Rainforest’s leading-edge low-carbon research and demonstration project.

“It is crucial that the UK retains EU funding for innovative projects such as this, which seek to provide practical solutions for making reductions in our carbon emissions,” Dr. Lucas says. “These reductions are urgently needed if we are to stave off the worst effects of climate change, and now is not the time to be depriving such research projects of financial support.”

The Living Rainforest is within striking distance of building one of the ‘greenest glasshouses’ in Europe, as part of a wider demonstration of renewable energy alternatives for heating buildings and growing food in the future.

The charity has already raised over £1.8 million from the EC, following stiff competition from other projects across Europe.

But without a matched funding contribution of about £830,000 from the UK, the charity may be forced to return funding to Brussels.

“This project deserves the full support of Gordon Brown and his Government, and we welcome the backing of Caroline Lucas and the Green Party,” says Karl Hansen at the Living Rainforest.
