Europe’s “greenest greenhouse” one step closer to completion
Environmental visitor attraction, The Living Rainforest has received a major funding offer that will enable it to make its tropical greenhouses even greener.
Under the LIFE-Environment programme 2005, the EU has awarded The Living Rainforest almost 2.3 million Euros to fund a greenhouse conversion project. The money will be spent transforming the Berkshire attraction into one of Europe’s greenest greenhouses.
The overall EU programme received 534 proposals and only 84 were successful in winning investment. The Living Rainforest was chosen because of its unique approach to demonstrating the positive impact well designed buildings can have on the world.
“The funding given to us by the EU will help The Living Rainforest to build greenhouses that are at the cutting edge of conservation,” said Karl Hansen, director of The Living Rainforest. “Visitors will be able to learn about the latest approaches to building design and, more importantly, see it in action.”
He added: “This is important work being done on a European scale to integrate greenhouses with buildings. As individuals and businesses, we hope to demonstrate the positive benefits that intelligent design can bring. We see our work as part of the wider cultural shift needed to help meet environmental responsibilities in the West.”
