Ola Ullsten

Ola UllstenFormer Prime Minister of Sweden and Co-Chair of the World Commission on Forests and Sustainable Development.

Dr. Ullsten was a member of the Swedish parliament from 1964 to 1982, and served simultaneously as the Minister for International Development Cooperation from 1976-78 and as Minister of Immigration (1977-1978), then as Minister of Foreign Affairs (1979-1982). He was elected Leader of the Swedish Liberal Party (1978-1982) and later the same year became the Prime Minister.

From 1983 to 1989 Dr. Ullsten was the Swedish Ambassador to Canada and from 1989 to 1995 the Ambassador to Italy. Since then, Dr. Ullsten has pursued his interest in global environmental issues with emphasis on the role of forests. He has served as co-chairman of the independent World Commission on Forests and Sustainable Development since 1995.

Dr. Ullsten is also a senior fellow at the International Institute for Sustainable Development in Winnipeg and a member of the Board of Directors of the Woods Hole Research Center, Massachusetts, USA. A part time resident of Ontario, Dr. Ullsten has accepted the position of Chair of the OAC International Advisory Council.

Dr. Ullsten was recognized for his activities with an honorary degree at the University of Guelph in 1999.
