Conference on science & indigenous knowledge in the Colombian Amazon (June 07)
On June 22nd, The Living Rainforest will host a unique conference entitled ‘A Meeting of Minds: Science and Indigenous Knowledge in the Colombian Amazon – Converging Perspectives’.
The conference will bring together experts, educators and interested individuals from Colombia and the UK.
It will include tours of The Living Rainforest plant collection by both Colombian and British scientific and indigenous experts.
Speakers will include Professor Sir Ghillean Prance (world-renowned botanist and former director of Kew Gardens), Peter Bunyard (founding science editor of The Ecologist magazine), Colombian scientists and indigenous leaders from the San Martin de Amacayacu Tikuna community. The programme will offer insights into Tikuna culture and history, contemporary issues facing the Colombian Amazon and work being carried out to preserve it.
The event will also feature a Special Preview of the ‘Spirits of the Forest’ Photo Exhibition, showing at The Living Rainforest from June 23 to July 20, 2007. The exhibit explores traditional beliefs about spirit guides and guardians of the forest.
The cost of the event is £45 and includes lunch. This is a not for profit event – costs are to cover the transport of guest speakers from Colombia. Any excess will be donated to the community of San Martin de Amacayacu.
